Book Review: Fashion Illustration for Designers, by Katheryn Hagen

Fashion Illustration for Designers, by Katheryn Hagen is probably one of the best books on this subject. The market is flooded with books on how to create fashion illustrations, but few bring together skilled life drawing techniques, sketch and drawing, along with color media and Photoshop technologies.

Written for fashion students, the scope is wide, covering both women's and men's illustrations. The pages shown here show how clearly this author demonstrates scale and the fashion figure. There are more chapters on specific types of apparel and techniques.

Illustration techniques include how to use markers and colored pencils to create full color sketches. All of the techniques shown will help to enhance a fashion or costume portfolio. In addition to the book itself, this publication includes a DVD with her skilled demonstrations showing how she works to produce several illustrations. In case you are wondering, she also includes CAD illustration technologies, for those who wish to use Photoshop to enhance their illustrations.

If you have only one illustration book in your library, this is the one to have. It is spiral bound, making it easy to lay flat on a work table.
